Yoo Mee-Sook

Lee Se-Yeon
Abstract
The aim of this qualitative study is to describe a young daughter` s experiences of living with her mother who has breast cancer. A girl aged 13 years whose mothers were diagnosed with breast cancer within a year prior to the study was interviewed 5 times over a period of 2 months. With the use of a phenomenologic interpretive paradigm, multiple levels of analysis of transcribed semi structured interviews yielded a number of common themes as well as a unique account. The young daughter`s inner experiences of living with her mother with early breast cancer revealed a number of major themes, including 1) a changing in the experience structure 2) changes in the perception regarding the image of mother`s breast, 3) changes in the interactive relationship between the mother and the daughter. These findings had important implications for psychotherapeutic intervention strategies on daughters of mothers with breast cancer. These include the accessibility of useful information about breast cancer, and developing effective ways of communicating and facilitating the use of positive coping mechanisms.
